The ‘Origin Stories’ free documentary workshops were held at Back Lane Studios in the summer of 2018. They were funded by ArtReach, a program that supports community arts projects initiated and led by youth, and the Toronto Arts Council. The workshops were led by Michael O’Meara, then a recent high-school graduate, who is now attending Ryerson University, and co-facilitated by professional youth filmmakers, Katerina Zoumbalakis and James Malekzadeh. Twelve youths aged 10 – 19 participated in twelve workshops over six weeks. The workshops culminated with a screening of thirteen fun and funny short documentaries. There were three phases of training and each participant collaborated on a documentary for each phase. The first subject was Sorauren Park, the second took place in High Park, the third project was a self-initiated documentary detailing the participants’ own origin story.
