The Moccasin Identifier Project: September, 2023

A Stencilling — and Learning Session

On Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, we had a stencilling session at the studio to prepare signs for the Sept. 30 Orange Shirt Day Walk. We partnered with the Friends of Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden to bring the Moccasin Identifier Project to our studio.

The stencil designs, created by artist Philip Cote, were painted on placards to be placed along Roncesvalles for the Sept. 30 Orange Shirt Day Walk. The four different moccasin styles represent Ontario’s four different Indigenous language groups: Anishinaabe, Wendat, Cree, and Seneca.

Thanks go to the Peace Garden’s Abby Bushby for her work putting this event together and to the Roncesvalles Village BIA for sponsoring the signs.nRoncyWorks generously sponsored this Moccasin Identifier workshop. Loblaws (2280 Dundas St.), and No Frills (222 Lansdowne Ave.) supplied us with treats.

Below are photos of some of the participants at the studio and some of the results!!
