Documentary with film’s director
Nancy Lang brings her film A Word after a Word after a Word is Power to the Revue Cinema for a screening and discussion about Margaret Atwood, arguably Canada’s most famous author. The documentary was released in 2019. Nancy will join us for a Q&A after the screening and provide us with insight into what it was like to make this film about a Canadian literary treasures!
Nancy and her fellow director and producer Peter Raymont were able to follow Atwood and her late partner Graeme Gibson over a two-year period as the couple travelled to speaking engagements. The success of the Handmaid’s Tale television series had made Atwood an international star.
Using a rich collection of photos and film clips, Lang and Raymont delve into Atwood’s personal history, her life as a child in the bush where her father worked as an entomologist, her experiences at Radcliffe and Harvard, and her development as a writer.
What struck Nancy the most about Atwood? “Margaret is wickedly funny,” she says. Atwood’s wit and sense of irony are so clearly revealed in this film, as is her commitment to doing what is fun. As she says, “If you’re not having fun, then what is it? It’s homework, and you remember how much we didn’t like that!”
Tickets are available in advance on Eventbrite for $10; $12 at the door.

(In the documentary, Atwood refers to the Bohemian Embassy, a coffee house on St. Nicholas St. back in the late 1950s and early ’60s, where she cut her performance teeth. Watch our documentary about Don Cullen, the Bohemian Embassy’s founder and impresario!)
