Two Summer Camps for 2020
Favourite Foods: Making a Video (ages 8-13)!
At Back Lane Studios, we are cautious about opening for in-studio workshops this summer. Imstead, our instructor Jeana McCabe will offer two virtual video-making programs.
The Plan: What is one of your child’s favourite food? He or she will discuss what they like the best, interview a parent, friend or other relative who prepares the favourite (in person or by phone or computer), try cooking it (with parental assistance where necessary!) and then talk about the outcome – all incorporated in a quick video!
Jeana has scheduled two sessions:
- A 5-day program from July 20-24 (fee $225)
- A 4-day program August 4-7 (fee $180). (A condensed version of the five-day program)
The Devices: Using a smart phone or tablet and a computer with iMovie or MovieMaker, the children will make short videos. (No video-making experience is necessary. )Jeana will be working with them using Google Classroom and Google Meet for teaching and for getting together! (From experience, she has found virtual courses require more preparation and time commitment for working with students individually.)
What the kids will learn! Jeana will coach them in interview techniques, camera use, visual story-telling and video editing. They will also get to share some very tasty recipes!
About Jeana: A veteran educator and filmmaker, she created and taught a high-school video-making program focused on social justice for many years. Since retiring, she has directed more than 40 short docs, working with seniors at Back Lane Studios.

What do kids like about summer? Ice cream! This summer\'s documentary class voted to do their documentaries about Ed\'s Real Scoop, one of Roncesvalles ice-cream purveyors. And they got the real scoop, from Ed, who rarely gives interviews. Thank you, Ed.
Why does someone go into the ice-cream business? Our workshop documentarians asked Ed, of Ed's Real Scoop, to find out.
Each crew took a slightly different approach to this short practice video about the fresh produce stand on Roncesvalles, all practising their video-making skills during our summer documentary workshop.
This two-minute video by Max reflects a lot of learning about making a video, from camera to script, research, editing and pacing.
During the documentary session this summer, participants started by doing a short practice video about the small fruit stand on Roncesvalles Ave. They learned a bit about the produce and where it came from.
Conor D. wanted to do a video about Sorauren Park. He planned, photographed and directed this documentary that was screened last fall at the WaBash festival in Sorauren Park.
Jesse C. F. and August G.W. were intrigued by the stories of animals on the lam from the High Park Zoo. This is the video they researched, directed and filmed. Mentor Jordan McTavish helped with the editing.
