Charles Hefferon, a remarkable athlete, won silver in the most dramatic Olympic marathon ever run. Although he raced for South Africa, he could also be considered a Canadian, having served in the North-West Mounted Police, Canadian forces in the Boer War, the Royal Canadian Dragoons and was killed on duty as an OPP officer.
